My husband and I curl up on the couch to watch a movie. It’s a save-the-world thriller much like many others. But there’s one line that keeps returning to my mind long after the credits roll. The main character, a security agent, is being framed. When others have only accusations, her boss comes to her defense. He says, “We don’t believe the worst about our best.”
If you could listen in on my thoughts about myself some days it would sound like a series of accusations too.
“You’re not good enough.”
“You need to be trying harder.”
“You’re just being selfish.”
I imagine you have your own list. For a long time, I mistakenly believed God was the source of those words. But God does not believe the worst about His best.
Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. {Rom. 8:33- 34}
The harsh words we all hear in our hearts have many sources: our human self, the enemy of our souls, unkind people from our past. But we can be certain they are not from God. We can silence them by saying, “I’m not going to believe or receive this because ‘there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus’ {Rom 8:1}.”
Why does this matter so much? Because God is committed to truth winning in the end. And like the heroine in the movie, we’re an essential part of completing the mission. We don’t have to listen to the accusations. We don’t have to live by the lies. We are women of the Word and we can change the world—starting with our own hearts.
