I used to think bravery would feel more impressive. Maybe like a roar. Maybe like certainty. Maybe like walking into a room with my shoulders back, my voice steady, and my heart entirely unconcerned about what anyone thought.

But most of the brave things in real life don’t feel that way.

Bravery often feels like walking through the door when part of you wants to turn around. It feels like saying the honest sentence with a shaky voice. It feels like showing up to the group, making the call, sending the email, beginning the work, or trying again after something didn’t go the way you hoped.

Sometimes we wait to feel brave before we do what God is asking us to do. But bravery may not arrive as a feeling first. It may come as you take one small step in faith while doubt is still holding your hand.

This is actually good news. It means you don’t have to be fearless before you can be faithful. You don’t have to wait until your knees stop knocking or your confidence feels polished and shiny. You can be scared and still obey. You can be unsure and still move toward love. You can whisper yes when you don’t have a roar in you.

God is not measuring the volume of your courage. He sees the quiet yes no one else notices. He sees the effort it took to stay when you wanted to run. He sees the way you keep offering your heart, your gifts, your presence, and your love even when it costs you something.

Maybe bravery is not the absence of fear. Maybe bravery is what happens when God’s strength meets us right in the middle of it.

A prayer for today: God, you are the one who makes me brave, even in the moments when I still feel fear. Help me keep showing up anyway and saying “yes” to whatever you are inviting me to do with you. I love you and I trust you. Amen.

Cheering you on,
