Have you ever felt like you should just “get over it” or “push through”? Me too. This week I’ve been thinking about an experience a few years ago that helped change my perspective.
I lift my shoulder, then wince, and my doctor says, “Microtears.” The stress of a new exercise program has caused tiny bits of damage to my tendons. I need a bit of treatment and recovery time. He adds, “Good thing you didn’t push through the pain or wait a lot longer. Then you’d need something a lot more serious.”
Yet all through that day’s workout I kept telling myself, “You should be able to do this.” Then when I got home I thought, Pain is part of the process—I’m just being weak if I stop and get help for this now.
Sound familiar? Life gives all of our hearts microtears. Recently a painful situation made me ache inside. My day was a little busier than is best. I felt stressed about a conflict. None of these were big on their own but together they added up.
Today I can either push through the pain or pause and ask, “What do I need to heal and recover?” The answer might be a nap, a conversation with a trusted friend, or some time for prayer. Nothing big, but without these things what’s minor now could turn into something far more serious.
The God who numbers every hair on our heads also cares about every microtear in our hearts. He’s our healer and helper, mender and maker, the one who’s big enough to handle anything and loving enough to help with even the smallest things too.
Gratefully,
Holley
