(When I’m really happy, I giggle.)
My husband enjoys giving me reports the next morning. About a week ago he asked, “So did you catch those invisible squirrels?”
I squinted at him in the early light, thinking I needed another cup of coffee and fast.
Apparently I’d dreamed about invisible squirrels and woke him up telling him so as I snoozed. Huh.
I thought about those silly squirrels a few days later on a particularly busy day. It sure seemed like I was being chased by things beyond my control–deadlines, expectations, anxiety. Didn’t God just send me roses and tell me everything was going to be different?
I flipped back to the second chapter of Song of Solomon and read again what God has whispered to my heart about flowers, coming away with Him, being His beloved.
And then a few lines below…”Catch for us the little foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.”
It turns out even blessings in our lives need protecting. We’ve got to guard the joy we receive from God.
I made a list in my journal of all the “invisible squirrels/little foxes.” The one that stood out the most? Trying to make everyone happy.
And then four words slipped into my heart and onto the page…
Love All
Please One
Our purpose is to please God, not people. I Thessalonians 2:4
The invisible squirrels came to a screeching halt. It was like throwing them in a bag and tossing them at the foot of the cross.
Turns out the only way to catch them is with the trap of truth.
Snap-snap.
I drifted off to sleep with a smile…
I may have even giggled.
