I recorded the audiobook of The Powerful Purpose of Introverts this week. (You can hear a sneak peek and watch me have an awkward moment on this video!) A few pages from the end I saw it—a typo (gasp!).
My publisher was able to fix it right before the book went to the printer (whew!), but I felt what every writer does when this happens… SHEER, IRRATIONAL PANIC.
Later that evening (before I knew the mistake could be fixed), I began to
be very calm and spiritual FREAK OUT. Then I sensed a whisper from the One who knows me best, “Books are like people, they don’t have to be perfect for people to love them.”
Are any of you recovering perfectionists too?
Then start the sentence with what YOU need to hear most…
Projects are like people, they don’t have to be perfect for people to love them.
Homes are like people, they don’t have to be perfect for people to love them.
Churches are like people, they don’t have to be perfect for people to love them.
Meals, holidays, paintings, pans of brownies, assignments, conversations, everything that makes us feel stress or pressure—they don’t have to be perfect for people to love them.
Why do mistakes bother us? Because we care. I truly believe this book will change the life of every person who reads it. I’ve spent years working on it. I still lay awake at night thinking about it. I believe in it that much.
But you know what? Something can be extraordinary, beautiful, powerful, meaningful, worthwhile, even world-changing without being perfect.
YOU can be extraordinary, beautiful, powerful, meaningful, worthwhile, even world-changing without being perfect.
Whew. I thought someone else might need to hear that today too! Or is it just me?
