Why Our Lives Don’t Need to Be a Perfect Performance

Faithfulness most often happens in the quiet and ordinary, in the unseen and uncelebrated, in the moments when there is no applause or recognition.

The master said, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” {Matt. 25:23}

He didn’t say, “Well done, good and flawless servant.”

Or “Well done, good and famous servant.”

We don’t need to be perfect. And we don’t need to be performers. We simply need to be faithful. The dictionary defines “faithful” as “steady in allegiance or affection.” And as my wise friend pointed out recently, “Faithfulness is never for a short period of time.” On any given day we may stumble, but what matters is the pattern over a lifetime.

Faithfulness is often underrated because it isn’t trendy or cool. It’s not glamorous or attention-grabbing. It isn’t chased down by the paparazzi. Faithfulness most often happens in the quiet and ordinary, in the unseen and uncelebrated, in the moments when there is no applause or recognition.

And we live in a culture that values fame over faithfulness. But our God doesn’t do the same. He isn’t looking for superstars. He’s looking for servants. “The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him” {2 Chron. 16:9}.

We live for an audience of One. And we don’t have to do “big” things for God to notice. He sees all we do. If we are simply seeking to obey then that’s enough. And there’s grace for the times when we fall short.

Let’s live faithfully today. And every day after until we’re home and get to hear these words for ourselves: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
