I’m home from speaking at the Northwest Christian Writers Conference in Seattle. I wish all of you had been there with me!
At writers conferences it seems the same hot potato is tossed around in every room, every workshop, over the dinner table and in the hallways.
It’s called the spotlight.
There is talk of being in the spotlight (aka building a platform).
And talk of staying out of the spotlight.
Some people love it.
Others hate it.
But it seems none of us know exactly what to do with it.
Of course, writers aren’t the only ones who struggle with the spotlight. I think we all do…
We want to shine.
We want to hide.
Most of all, we’d like to control where and when that beam is pointed. Lately, it seems the spotlight has been pointed a little more in my direction. I’ve developed a highly spiritual response that I will share with you. Ready?
hyperventilate
panic
pray
repeat
So last night as I drifted off to sleep I prayed again, “Lord, what do we do with the spotlight? Do we step into it? Avoid it?”
And in the dark it seemed a whisper that felt like a smile came to my heart…
Just make sure your spotlight is the Light of the World.
Ah, yes, that gives being in the spotlight a whole new meaning. Suddenly, it’s about being in Him. And wherever that is, that’s where I want to be. That spotlight can be just as bright in a quiet corner or on a huge stage.
Jesus, shine on us.
p.s. Congratulations to my dear friend and fellow writer Jenni Saake! She had the spotlight shined on her last week when she was nominated for an award as a Women’s Health Hero! Jenni has an amazing heart for encouraging women who are hurting. You can stop by Jenni’s site to find out more and vote for her!
