When you’re hard on yourself

Rocks photo by aeu4117 (flickr creative commons) The words stack on my back.

“You’re not good enough…”

“You shouldn’t be that way…”

“You’re letting everyone down…”

I bend with the weight.

Ache and groan.

Is this the cross I have to bear?

Then One comes and whispers,

“Beloved, I didn’t put those there.”

He lifts each one, sets it aside, and says instead…

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30

I’m hard on myself.

His yoke is easy.

I weigh myself down with impossible expectations.

His burden is light.

I stand up, loosen shoulders, breathe deep of grace,

and walk again with my heart held high.
